Single Origin vs. Blends: Choosing Your Coffee Path
Greetings, brave adventurers of the bean! Today, we gather around the roaster to tackle a question that has puzzled many a coffee kobold:
Should you choose single-origin coffee, or a blend?
Is one better than the other? Is this a battle of light versus dark? Order versus chaos? Paladin versus… well, also Paladin?
Fear not, we’re here to break it all down so you can choose the brew that best fits your quest.
What Is Single Origin Coffee?

Let’s start with the lone wanderer: single-origin coffee.
Single origin means exactly what it sounds like: coffee sourced from one specific place. That could be:
- A single country (like Ethiopia or Peru)
- A specific region
- Or even a single farm
Nothing is mixed in. No blending. No combining. Just one coffee, telling its own story.
Why People Love Single Origin
Single-origin coffee is the purest expression of a bean. It showcases the natural flavors created by:
- The soil it was grown in
- The altitude
- The climate
- The processing method
This is where you’ll find those more distinct and nuanced tasting notes. These are things like:
- Bright citrus
- Berry and floral notes
- Honeyed sweetness
- Apple and caramel
Each cup is like reading a story straight from the source. No edits. No rewrites. This is why most of our roasts are single-origin, so we can bring you the best each region has to offer.
If you want to truly understand what a specific coffee tastes like, single-origin is the way to go.
What Is a Coffee Blend?
Now let’s talk about the party system: coffee blends.
A blend is when multiple coffees from different origins are combined to create a specific flavor profile.
And here’s where things get interesting. A lot of companies blend coffee for one main reason: cost savings.
They’ll take a small amount of a high-quality (and expensive) coffee, mix it with a larger portion of a cheaper one, and boom: lower costs, higher margins.
But that’s not how we roll.
How We Approach Blends at Dragon Roast

At Dragon Roast Coffee, we don’t blend to save gold. We blend to craft something intentional.
Take Barbarian, our espresso blend, for example.
Barbarian isn’t just thrown together. It’s a carefully crafted combination of three different coffees, each chosen for a specific reason: the Brazil adds a note of dark chocolate that pairs nicely with the cinnamon notes of the Honduras. Finally, the Colombia rounds it out, giving it smoothness and a thicker crema.
The goal isn’t to cut corners. It’s to create a brew that hits a very specific flavor target.
Bold. Smooth. Balanced. Ready for battle.
Blending, when done right, is less like cutting costs and more like assembling a party of adventurers, each member bringing something essential to the quest.
The Pros of Single Origin
If you’re the type who loves exploring new lands (and new flavors), single origin is your best friend.
With single-origin, you’ll get:
- Distinct, unique flavors
- A true representation of the coffee’s origin
- More variety from bag to bag
Single-origin coffees are also perfect for:
- Pour overs
- Coffee tasting
- Flavor exploration
They’re where coffee gets expressive, bright, and sometimes a little wild.
The Pros of Blends
Blends, on the other hand, are all about consistency and balance.
When you choose to party up with a blend, you’ll be getting:
- A smoother, more rounded cup
- Less extreme acidity or sharpness
- A reliable flavor profile every time
Blends are especially great for:
- Espresso
- Milk drinks (lattes, cappuccinos)
- Daily drinking
They’re designed to be approachable and dependable, like your party’s tank that never misses a session.
Aren’t Espresso Roasts Always Blends?

Ah, yes, the classic question.
Short answer: Not always, but usually.
You can absolutely use a single-origin coffee for espresso. In fact, some people love doing this to highlight unique flavors.
However, most espresso roasts are blends. And there’s a good reason for that.
Why Espresso Is Often Blended
Espresso is intense. It’s concentrated. It magnifies everything about a coffee, good and bad.
Blending helps:
- Balance out flavors so nothing is too sharp or overwhelming
- Create consistency when dialing in espresso shots
- Smooth out acidity for a more enjoyable experience
Historically, this goes back to Italy, where espresso was born. In Italy, it’s common for people to drink 4–5 espresso shots a day. If those shots were made from a super bright or acidic single-origin, it could get overwhelming fast.
Blends were developed to create a smooth, repeatable experience. Something you could drink multiple times a day without fatigue.
What About Robusta?
Some espresso blends out there include Robusta beans, which are often used to:
- Increase caffeine
- Produce thicker crema
But at Dragon Roast, we stick with 100% Arabica.
Why? Because Arabica offers better flavor complexity, smoother profiles, and a more refined experience. We’re here for great coffee, not shortcuts.
Our Blends (And What’s Coming Next)

Right now, Barbarian stands as our primary blend, a bold espresso roast crafted for balance and power.
But the party is growing.
We’re working on introducing Fighter, our upcoming blonde (lighter) espresso roast. This will offer a brighter, lighter take on espresso while still maintaining that signature balance you want in a blend.
Think of it as a more agile, quick-striking counterpart to Barbarian’s heavy-hitting style.
So… Which Should You Choose?
Here’s the truth:
There’s no “better” option, just different tools for different quests.
Choose Single Origin If You Want:
- To explore unique flavors
- A more expressive, nuanced cup
- A direct connection to where your coffee comes from
Choose a Blend If You Want:
- Balance and consistency
- A smoother, more approachable cup
- The best performance for espresso and milk drinks
Or, if you’re like most of us, just have both. Switch it up depending on your mood, your brew method, or your current questline.
The Final Sip
At the end of the day, coffee is about experience. Whether you’re diving into the bright, complex world of single origin or enjoying the crafted balance of a blend, each cup offers something different.
At Dragon Roast Coffee, we aim to honor both paths, celebrating the individuality of single-origin beans while crafting blends with purpose, not shortcuts.
So whether you’re brewing a lone-wolf pour over or pulling a perfectly dialed espresso shot with Barbarian, know this:
You’re not just drinking coffee.
You’re choosing your playstyle.
Now go forth, adventurer, and brew wisely.
